Msgr. W. Michael Mulvey,

Thank you for your response. I wanted to clarify the reason I was requesting the dispensation while Matthew and I have both been baptized – I was not raised in the church. I am not a practicing Catholic, and I know that even should we be granted with a dispensation, there will still be some extra education I will probably need to do apart from the marital counseling. It is very important to Matt that this union be blessed and recognized by the church so I was hoping to find a way to compromise on the issue. I’m not sure that this would make a difference but I thought I would provide you with a bit more background on the reason for the request.

God Bless,

Lindsey Swem

Thank you for the clarification, Lindsey.  I'm not sure that it will make a difference, but I appreciate you writing me about your situation.  What I would suggest to you at this point is that you contact the parish, perhaps the one Matthew is in touch with and begin working with their marriage preparation program.  Since you have a lot of time before the wedding date this can really be a time of spiritual growth for both of you individually and as a couple.
Again I wish you many graces now and in the future.  If I can answer other questions along the way, let me know.
Sincerely,
Msgr. Mulvey

My aunt had to have two weddings (number 2 in the Catholic Church). I hope you don't have to do that (could/would be very expensive).
